World Day of Asthma, raising awareness on a pending subject on children’s health

Posted by on June 11th of 2012.

Since 1988 more than fifty countries are celebrating the first Tuesday in May the World Asthma Day. All our readers and our community 2.0 have been able to notice that a very important part of our work during May, both regarding reflection and difussion has been focused from different approaches in asthma. This year in Spain the celebration of World Asthma Day coincided with a holiday, complicating action in the place, so we chose to enhance the dissemination of the day in networks. Fundació Roger Torné wanted to devote special attention, because this disease has become, in recent years, the leading chronic childhood respiratory disease. Currently, the data show that it is suffered by 10% of our children and adolescents, and that is triggered in part by the presence of pollutants in the air.

Throughout May, a month when Fundació Roger Torné has celebrated 28 years of activity, presence and content of the foundation in the media and our online magazine focused on asthma, its origin and its impact on children’s health. The result was that ComRadio conducted an extensive interview to Soledad Román, General Director of the Foundation on the topic on their program called “Maneres of Viure”. Also, the content of Soledad Román periodic contributions made in the Radio Arenys and Radio Mollet also dealt on asthma.

open doors day at Respiro

Last Saturday May 5th was one open doors day at the Farmhouse that we have in El Polell, which is our Casa del Aire and it is the place where Respiro program is held togerther with Airea Camp Holidays. El Polell is within Montseny Natural Park, where air quality and the natural environment are guaranteed. During the day all participants were explained, the beneficial effects achieved by breathing fresh air and by participating continuously in Respiro program. Er must outline the fact that it was in 1928 when the Montseny Natural Park was listed as a protected natural area that is the legal form prior to being considered a natural park

Another action carried out by FRT has been the agreement with Grupo Vias Respiratorias of AEPap, to relaunch the web “To breathe” (www.respirar.org/to-breathe.html) of wide international circulation. The purpose of this agreement is to provide quality and accurate information on this topic both to health professionals and patients and families of asthmatic patients. The website is a guarantee in this regard as it will be AEPap which coordinate its contents from now on. When the agreement was drafted, a press release was sent to all media in Spain and had a major impact.

The educational environment should provide with information on asthma

Also in our Inspira on-line magazine, several articles have been published about the factors and consequences of asthma. Dr. Manuel Praena, coordinator of the Group of Respiratory tract of the AEPap wrote about the role played by the school in the prevention of asthma assuring that it is important that the educational environment possesses more information both to favor the precocious diagnosis as to help the child who suffers an asthmatic crisis. Dr Praena writes that, according to the International Study Asthma and Allergy Children (ISAAC), study on the allergy and the asthma in the child, in Spain between 8 and 15 students out of every 100, suffer from asthma.

Doctor Herminia Villena, pediatrician of the medical equipment of our consultancy office, “Para padres y madres” (“For Parents”), reminds us in her article that there is no doubt on the existing relationship between the smoke of tobacco and the decrease of the pulmonary development of the fetus during his/her gestation. Also it alerts on the asthmatic teenager and potential smoker. In this respect it recommends to have a major surveillance and to work so that they are aware of the risks to which they will be exposed if they smoke.

Luis M. Jiménez, the executive director of OSE (Observatory of Sustainability of Spain), published an article last May on the quality of the air, health, quality of life and urban sustainability. In his exhibition he informs us exhaustively of the fact that the cities occupy 1 % of the territory, but they consume 75 % of the energy, generate 80 % of the emission of Greenhouse gases (GEI) and monopolize 85 % of the economic wealth in terms of PIB. We recommend its reading.

Our comunity 2.0

Fundació Roger also carried out last May, an important presence of contents on asthma in twitter and facebook. For two weeks we join the label #diamundialdelasma and #worldathasmaday, generating constant information concerning this topic. Likewise, in our facebook we offered the contents and the information more directly related to asthma, to all the families to rise their awareness about the important thing that is its prevention for the health of their sons and daughters.

Also it is necessary to emphasize the good reception of all the information published in Inspira, Para padres y madres (For Parents) and Twitter concerning the professionals and entities that are employed in the area of children’s health. Thanks to it our information has spread widely.
