Information and prevention, key factors on children's health

If I had to sum up the conclusions reached during the 3rd Conferences on children's health and environment that took place last January 26th in CaixaForum Madrid, I would not hesitate; I would choose prevention and information. What is more, I am convinced that both lecturers, Dr Manuel Praena and Dr Aaron Bernstein would agree with me, since both concepts appeared over and over during their lectures.

Information is essential for families, so that they can fully understand their own influence on their children's health, as per the environment point of view, but information is also necessary for the professionals working on health, especially for physicians and pediatricians, so that they consider the environmental factors as an additional element when establishing the diagnosis for certain pathologies, such as asthma.

Fundació Roger Torné has no doubts regarding the importance that the role played by pediatricians and nurses has when raising families aware regarding the importance of habits in accordance with environment. With the purpose of having at the professionals' on health disposal two perspectives regarding the influence that environment has on children' health, we have organized this Conferences on children's health and environment that, during its third edition, have counted with Fundacio La Caixa participation together with the Spanish Paedriatic Association for Primary Attention AEPap).

All of us who say we are working for children's health, have one responsibility: informing seriously, without unnecessary alarmism, offering families positive alternatives. With this objective, the serious information, which is rather a commitment, Inspira starts its first edition during 2012, a year full of uncertainties where, probably, the word "cuts" is the most heard and read one in the media.

Prevention is not necessarily linked to cost increase: it can suppose, many times, just a change in our habits, as it is shown in our article named "The air at our homes and its effects on children's health". On it, we thoroughly analyze the first environment we live in, after being born: our homes environment.

We spend most of our lives at home and our health, especially our children's, is influence by the quality of the air breathed within. Besides, two pediatricians, Dr Villena and Dr Praena talk in a useful and enjoyable way, about asthma and about the influence that environmental factors have on our health. All in all, throughout this First Inspira in 2012, you will find serious, exhaustive and rigorous information regarding the things that have an influence on our children's health and the things we can do in order to prevent since, all in all, is the most important thing for us all.
