Global warming and children health

OBJECTIVES AND GENERAL INFORMATION

In industrialized countries, three times as much people are dying at the moment because of asthma, than 20 years ago, despite the pharmacological advances and hospital assistance achieved during this period of time. It is remarkable that the pediatric population, despite being 20-25% of the total population, represents 40-45% of the total of asthma cases.

Fundació Roger Torné, a private foundation with no profit motive in mind was created on 1984 and it keeps its commitment with the disadvantaged childhood. Its main task at the moment is arising society awareness on the situation of lack of protection children are suffering in front of the influence of environmental factors, especially children’s respiratory health.

Following Lalonde1, the maintenance or the loss of health is lying on four pillars: human biology, environment, habits in life and the organization of cares towards health. In order to improve the wellbeing of the people in a community, the possibilities of action on each one of the said pillars must be taken into account. Some initiatives will be each individual’s responsibility, others will depend on the community and others will depend on the way the community is structured to provide cares.

In this lecture, the factors conditioning children’s respiratory health will be exposed, as well as their inter-relationship. Likewise, global warming effects on human wellbeing will be dealt together with their effects on three main axes: food, sweet water and clean air.

The conferences are addressed both to professional people belonging to the medicine area and to the general audience who is interested on this subject; the conferences intend to supply with different perspectives of the same social challenge: children’s health protection.
